Second Floor Extension for a Residential Building in Kerman
Situated in the historic city of Kerman, Iran, this project explores the design of a 165m² second-floor extension to an existing 150m² residential house. The addition responds to the evolving needs of a growing family by creating functional, flexible, and future-proof living spaces that respect both the cultural and climatic context of the region.
The second floor reflects the spatial logic of the ground floor, integrating living spaces, bedrooms, and service areas into a cohesive arrangement. Two dedicated storage rooms address the family’s organizational needs, while the balance between shared family areas and private retreats ensures comfort for multi-generational living.
A defining feature of the design is its transformable circulation system. Currently accessible via an independent external staircase, the second floor can seamlessly transition into a duplex configuration through the integration of an internal staircase. This adaptability enhances long-term usability, anticipating future lifestyle changes and enabling the home to accommodate multiple generations under one roof.
The extension maintains harmony with the existing architecture, ensuring visual continuity while introducing modern design elements for enhanced usability. Large windows and shaded openings maximize natural light and cross-ventilation, while protecting interiors from Kerman’s hot climate. Exterior finishes and materials complement the original structure, preserving the character of the home.
In response to Kerman’s climatic conditions, the design employs passive cooling strategies including deep overhangs, natural ventilation, and thermal insulation to improve energy efficiency. Locally sourced materials and construction practices further ground the extension within the region’s architectural identity while reducing environmental impact.
This second-floor extension in Kerman exemplifies a design that combines flexibility, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity. By offering the potential for standalone or duplex use, the project provides a future-oriented solution that adapts to the family’s evolving lifestyle while respecting the character of the original building.
